Abstract: 123 I and 201 Tl are gamma emitters used in nuclear medicine for functional imaging using SPECT (Single Photon
Emission Computer Tomography) agents. They are short life radioisotopes produced in cyclotrons through nuclear
reactions induced by protons usually accelerated at energies of several tens of MeVs. At such energies many reaction
channels are open (competing reactions) and more then one reaction product is obtained. Inevitably, after the irradiation
process the target will contains radioactive impurities. The level of these impurities must be minimized by a judicious
choice of the projectiles energy ranges. The purpose of this work is to analyze the cross sections of the commonly used
reactions for 123 I and 201 Tl and production, as well as their most important competitors, in order to predict the protons
optimum energy ranges. The cross sections data are taken from the IAEA database dedicated to medical radioisotope
production [1]. |
