Abstract: A constant supply of energy is required by all animals to sustain life. Animals must obtain their energy from chemical bonds of foods’ complex molecules. Energy content of a substance is typically determined by completely oxidizing (burning) the compound to carbon dioxide and water. The amount of energy given off is measured and known as gross energy. Usually, it is measured by bomb calorimeter method. In this paper are presented the gross energy measurements of basic food nutrients, glucose and maltose, by bomb calorimeter method. |
