Abstract: Radiation doses from diagnostic radiology are the largest contribution to the collective dose from all man-made sources of radiation in different countries. In Romania the contribution of the medical irradiation is about 0.30 mSv/year, representing 11.5% of the annual effective dose (2.60 mSv). To date, this contribution is about 0.5 mSv/year smaller than previously calculated in the early „90s, due to the replacement of old X-ray units in the Romanian hospitals. However there is steel room for further improvements by optimizing the entire medical X-ray diagnostic process. The purpose of this work is to discuss the main methods of dose reduction including the justification of the procedures, the correlation between the radiation dose and the purpose of X-ray examination, as well as a number techniques involving equipment and software design, operational parameters and shielding calculations. |
