Abstract: The rheological properties of a liquid are dominant features that can be quantified to characterize its behavior, rheology having various applications in engineering, geophysics, physiology and pharmaceutics. The present study was intended as a laboratory experiment for students in order to get acquainted with basic methods of characterizing solutions and mixtures of miscible liquids. The experiment was focused on measuring the rheological parameters - such as density, viscosity and surface tension - of various binary solutions at room temperature. The students will be organized in several groups in order to prepare the binary solutions by mixing volumes of ethanol and distilled water. They must calculate the adequat volume proportions, so that they will obtain an array of solvent mixtures, ranging from 10:90 to 90:10 ethanol in aqueous solutions. Rheological features will be analyzed by applying standard laboratory techniques: density will be measured using a hydrometer suitable for aqueous solutions with density ranging between 0.7 and 1.00 g/cm3; viscosity will be assessed by capillary method using an Ubbelohde device, while surface tension will be measured by stalagmometric method. The obtained values for each parameter will be introduced in the corresponding formulae (that students must be already familiar with) and the final results will be tabled. Comparative analysis among the obtain values of rheological parameters for each prepared ethanol-water mixture will be accomplished.
