Abstract: The electromechanical properties of some ionic polyurethanes under static electric field were investigated. All
unelectroded polymer films showed a quadratic dependence of the thickness induced strain versus static electric field. This
behaviour is consistent with an electrostrictive response. The induced strains were found between 1.6% and 1.8% for an
applied electric field of about 3.6 MV/m. Electrostrictive coefficient, mechanical pressure, response time and energy
density were also determined. The promising results obtained suggest that ionic polyurethanes could be a new
electroactive polymer class with improved electrostrictive responses. |
