Abstract: In the present paper the surface modifications of polyethylene terephthalate by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD)
plasma treatment was studied. The DBD plasma is produced in helium at atmospheric pressure. The polymer sample is
placed on the ground electrode and the treatment time was varied between 30 s and 450 s.
The PET surface modifications were analyzed by contact angle method and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM)
technique. An improved wettability of the polymer film and localized picks were observed after the atmospheric plasma
treatments. Modifications induced on the surface morphology of the polymer sample under experimental conditions
presented in this paper are at atomic and molecular level, for the short treatment durations. The AFM technique revel
significant modifications of the surface roughness only for the longer treatment durations (over 400 s). |
