Abstract: Recent studies demonstrated that cells can attach and organize much better around fibers with diameters smaller than
their dimensions [1]. Electric spinning (i.e. electrospinning) is a well known method to produce microand/
or nanofiber
nonwoven membranes that physically mimic very well the structure of the extracellular matrix of many tissues and organs
and offer a 3D structure almost ideal for cells growth [2]. Electrospinning was performed at room temperature, in a
deposition chamber with controlled humidity of RH 55%, the dc voltage applied between the electrodes being 18 kV. The
gelatin nanofibers were colected on 2x2 cm thin glass substrates placed on the negative electrode.
In tissues and bone engineering, the gelatin fibrous structures are of great importance due their biocompatibility and
biodegradability [3]. In the present work we investigated the electrospinning deposition process and determined the
optimal parameters leading to improuved surface properties of the gelatin nanofiber membranes. |
