Abstract: A shallow one-component fluid layer on a flat large metal plate and under atmospheric air pressure is uniformly heated from below. If a critical vertical temperature gradient, which depends on the properties of the liquid layer, is reached, a pattern of hexagonal cells will form. The result of this experiment, known as the „Bénard cells”, is a classical example of a hydrodynamic instability and can be in principle described by the basic equations of thermodynamics and fluid dynamics. Our aim is to emphasize the role of the surface tension in the genesis of such structures, considered a classical example of self-organized pattern. |
