Abstract: Spatial and spatiotemporal patterns in a dc gas discharge produced between a cold plane cathode and a point anode are explained considering a scenario of self-organization, the final product of which is an anode glow. The key process in the onset of the anode glow dynamics is the secondary electron emission from the discharge tube. Playing the role of an internal source of charged particles as well as of an S-shaped, respectively, an N-shaped negative differential resistance, the anode glow strongly influences the working regimes of all plasma devices. |
