Abstract: Porins represent a class of membrane proteins that allows the passive diffusion of solutes across certain bacterial membranes. In this work we studied the conductivity properties of such membrane pores belonging to the OmpF class. Our measurements were focused on the electrical current analysis through porins, which are inserted spontaneously into phosphatidylcholine biomembranes, at various holding potentials. The artificial biomembrane system used was represented by folded bilayer membranes (BLMs). Within certain limits (0 - 100 mV), these nonspecific porins behave as ohmic conductors; i.e., they exhibit linear voltage–current relationships. This is indicative for the presence of large water-filled rigid pores. |
