Abstract: The importance of skeletal system in the human body was the reason for intensive development of synthetic materials used for the repair and reconstruction of diseased or damaged parts of the skeleton (implants). The shape and type of implant, how it interfaces with the body and its time of use impose few biological requirements as: biocompatibility, bioactivity, biodegradability, infection resistance and thromboresistance and material properties: texture, porosity, crystallinity, wettability, durability, surface charge and chemistry, conductivity, dilatation, high mechanical strength, aging and corrosion resistance. The material properties of few biocompatible ceramics as tri-calcium phosphate - Ca3(PO4)2 and bioactive ceramics as hydroxyapatite HAP (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) are reviewed in the present work. |
