Abstract: Wood is a natural carbohydrate polymer used in many applications as building material/timber, furniture, interior panelling, as fuel, in paper industry and as musical instruments etc. Due to the abundant functional groups based on hydroxyl and oxygen functionalities the wood has a very high affinity for water and organic liquids. As consequence, the wood is vulnerable to attack of the biological agents (microorganisms, beetles and termites), to mechanical stress and also to the environmental conditions (humidity, temperature, sunlight, volatile organic compounds, heat etc.). These unavoidable conditions may induce the loss of the initial properties, also their dimensional and time stability. Finally, it is expected the deterioration and the total degradation of the wood mass. |
