Abstract: Sterols molecules are essential for the organization and function of certain biological membranes. In particular,
ergosterol is an important component of fungal plasma membranes. By measuring the electric current through a multistate
channel formed by the peptide antibiotic alamethicin in planar lipid membranes, we studied the effect of ergosterol on the
ion transport across the membrane. We used different concentrations of ergosterol (i.e., 10%, 20% and 30%) and showed
that the conductance of the alamethicin channel decreased with increasing amounts of ergosterol. This results may prove
essential for understanding how such sterols modulate the interactions between ion channel forming peptides and lipid
membranes. |
