| Abstract: In this work the one of the most interesting specialized techniques with electron beams, namely the Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT) and the mobile linear accelerators dedicated to this irradiation technique are briefly reviewed. The
IORT can be performed with conventional electron accelerators equipped with special designed electron applicators or with dedicated mobile electron accelerators, this second alternative being more advantageous. Currently, there are only two mobile
IORT systems in use: the Mobetron (Intraop Medical Incorporated, USA), which is more established in the United States than in other countries, and the NOVAC7 (Hitesys, Italy), which is more widely accepted in Europe than elsewhere. There is a third IORT accelerator, recently developed in Italy, LIAC (Info & Tech), considered to be an improved version of NOVAC7. |
